(August 18, 2010) - Major GRE® Milestone Means Good News for Students Planning for Graduate and Business School

Princeton, N.J.  (August 18, 2010) —

The highly publicized announcement of the GRE® revised General Test launch will get some added attention by students returning to campus, as ETS marks the "One Year to Go" milestone until the test's August 2011 introduction. Students thinking about their graduate and business school options will begin to prepare in earnest for the upcoming changes.

"We have received tremendously positive feedback from students and faculty about the changes that will be introduced in August 2011," says David G. Payne, VP and COO of College and Graduate Programs at ETS. "The early announcement, the availability of free test preparation materials for the GRE revised General Test, and the news about the special, limited-time 50-percent discount in August and September 2011 mean test takers have ample time to prepare at their own pace."

Since posting its free test preparation materials on the GRE® website, ETS has seen the number of visits grow as students become more interested in learning about the new types of questions and new functionality that will be part of the GRE revised General Test when it is introduced. "

Some of the new features that test takers will notice about the GRE revised General Test include:

  1. More questions featuring real-life scenarios that better reflect the kind of thinking students will do in today's demanding graduate and business school programs
  2. A better test-taking experience with many new navigation features, including the ability to skip questions and go back to them later within a section
  3. New answer types, such as filling in a number or providing more than one response when asked, so students can better demonstrate what they know
  4. An on-screen calculator* for the Quantitative Reasoning section

"For college juniors and seniors heading back to school, now is a good time to experience the GRE revised General Test, which will launch in August 2011," says Payne. "The free test preparation materials give them an excellent opportunity to practice answering the questions and try out the new test-taker friendly features, like moving forward and backward in a section."

The free test preparation material available online includes the following:

  1. Powerprep® II Software, a downloadable program that gives students a simulated test-taking experience of the computer-based GRE revised General Test. The software provides a timed test that demonstrates the new design features, including allowing test takers to move back and forth and change answers within a section, as well as a new on-screen calculator.
  2. The Practice Book for the Paper-based GRE® revised General Test, which provides a simulated test-taking experience for individuals in areas of the world where the GRE revised General Test will be administered as a paper-based test.
  3. New answer types, such as filling in a number or providing more than one response when asked, so students can better demonstrate what they know
  4. Sample questions for all Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing sections of the test.

The GRE revised General Test will be introduced worldwide in August 2011. ETS will offer a limited-time 50-percent discount on the test fee to all individuals who take the GRE revised General Test between August 1 and September 30, 2011. Test takers are encouraged to visit the GRE website for full details.
